What is Permaculture?

Earth Care • People Care • Fair Share

What is Permaculture?

Earth Care • People Care • Fair Share

Permaculture, (permanent + agriculture) is a term coined by Australians Bill Mollison and David Holmgren. Permaculture is a design system for sustainable human habitation.  A major focus is the sustainable and harmonious use of resources for safe food production.  It is based on 12 practical integrated design principles and methods modelled on the natural world. These principles can be applied to both urban and rural environments.

We acknowledge that the development of Permaculture philosophy and practice has included significant contributions derived from organic agricultural systems from across the world. We came from the land and through Nature’s wisdom we learn better ways to live.

What permaculturists are doing is the most important activity that any group is doing on the planet. We don’t know what a truly sustainable future is going to be like, but we do need options, we need people experimenting in all kinds of ways, and permaculturists are one of the critical groups that are doing that.
